We know the Abrams is a good tank because it has a 3 decade track record of excellent performance that earned it the right to bill itself the best tank in the world.
Proven reliability
We know the Armata is a great tank because... because... ummmm. Actually, we don't know any such thing. All we have is basically the equivalent of the manufacturer's brochure saying "this is a really, really, really good tank, guys. Honest!" echoed by the Russian government iterating that it's a good tank.
Question mark
No objective outsider has assessed the Armata's performance and whether it actually delivers what the Russians claim it delivers. Is the engine reliable? Who knows. Is the software good? Beats me. Does it handle great? Your guess is as good as mine. How about crew comfort? Shrug. Adequate protection? I dunno. Accurate gun? Maybe, or maybe not.
Claiming the Armata is a competitor for world's greatest tank based on the available info is no different than believing a new car make/ model is awesome just because its manufacturer released a TV ad saying it's an awesome car. |
